When AI Meets Imagination: A Journey Into the Future of Creativity
Hey everyone! Welcome to my Substack, where I'll be sharing insights from my research at the intersection of generative AI and creative processes.
This spring, I’m spending the quarter at Stanford exploring two of my favorite topics - technology and artistic expression - through the Research Driven Inspiration course at the GSB. As someone who’s passionate about both, I’m curious about how these worlds are colliding and what it means for the future of creative work.
Why This Research Matters
The creative landscape is undergoing a profound transformation.
From DALL·E and Midjourney to Runway’s text-to-video generators, we’re seeing visual tools rewire the way art is made. Musicians like Timbaland are experimenting with AI composition tools. Fashion designers - from indie creators to luxury houses - are prototyping garments and exploring new aesthetics with generative AI. Reactions across the industry are mixed: some creatives feel empowered, others wary.
I'm approaching this space with a central question: Can generative AI help, not hurt, the creative industry? And if so, what does that look like in a way that honors the idiosyncratic, deeply human aspects of creative work?
What I'm Exploring
This research will focus on the emerging paradigm where human creativity and artificial intelligence act as collaborative partners. Rather than replacing human ingenuity, I believe AI has the potential to support it - enhancing ideation, accelerating workflows, and unlocking new forms of expression.
I'm particularly interested in three areas where AI and human creativity intersect:
Collaborative Ideation Tools
How might AI enhance early brainstorming between creatives and their clients? Right now, many use general-purpose tools like Midjourney for ideation, but there’s a gap for purpose-built platforms that align creative visions early and reduce revision cycles.
Creative Partnership Systems
What would it look like to design AI tools that preserve the joyful parts of creativity - while removing the tedious ones? The most successful tools may not be those that automate, but those that amplify.
Intuitive Creative Control
Why are most AI interfaces so text-heavy, when so many creatives are visual thinkers? I’m interested in how we might blend AI’s exploratory power with direct manipulation - interfaces that feel more like sketching, less like coding.
An Iterative Exploration
This research is itself a creative process - open-ended, exploratory, and iterative. Just like an artist might chase an idea through sketches and rough drafts, I’m approaching this work with rigor and curiosity, open to unexpected connections.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing takeaways from conversations with artists, designers, and technologists; reflections on emerging tools; and thoughts on where this rapidly evolving space may be headed.
If you’re working on something related, or have thoughts, critiques, or ideas - I’d love to hear from you. Just reply to this post or reach out. I’m here to learn as much as I can, and I’m excited to share the journey with you. ☺️
